Chesapeake VA is a diverse city with urban areas as well as many square miles of protected forests and wetlands, including a substantial portion of the Great Dismal Swamp. Formed as a city in 1963, Chesapeake is currently the third most populous city in Virginia. In 2006, its population was estimated to be 220,560, an 11% increase since its 2000 census count. Prior to the late 1980’s, much of Chesapeake was either suburban or rural, serving as a bedroom community of the adjacent cities of Norfolk and Virginia Beach with residents commuting to these locations. Beginning in the late 1980s and continuing to the present, however, Chesapeake has seen significant growth, attracting numerous and significant industries and businesses of its own.

Thanks to its close proximity to many other parts of Hampton Roads, Chesapeake is a convenient place to call home. The Norfolk International Airport is only 15-25 minutes away, and Interstate 64 – part of the Hampton Roads Beltway – passes through the city. The beautiful Outer Banks area of North Carolina is only a 45-minute drive from Chesapeake, thanks to the newly improved Route 168 By-Pass bypass that runs directly across the state border.

Chesapeake is known for its outstanding public school system, which is compromised of 28 elementary and primary schools, 10 middle schools, and 7 high schools. Families enjoy the many attractions of Chesapeake, including several city parks, a planetarium, and many nature trails. There are also abundant shopping opportunities and beautiful golf courses in this large city.
